For DOT-regulated employers, the panel is not really a choice. Federal regulations define exactly what must be tested.

The Standard DOT 5-Panel Test

Under 49 CFR Part 40, DOT drug testing uses a standard 5-panel test. The five required categories are:

• Cocaine metabolites
• Phencyclidine (PCP)
• Amphetamines, including methamphetamine
• Opioids covered by the DOT testing regulations

Construction companies, healthcare providers, manufacturing operations, and safety-sensitive non-CDL roles often choose a 10-panel because their employees have access to equipment, patients, or environments where a wider range of substances could create risk.

How to Choose

• If you are a DOT-regulated employer, use the standard 5-panel DOT test. It is not optional.
• If you operate a non-DOT workplace and want basic coverage, a 5-panel non-DOT screen is often sufficient.
